Scoring

One team score per hole, totalled as stroke play. Scores go low — a decent four-person scramble often finishes ten or more under par, which is exactly the point.

Team handicap is commonly a small percentage of the combined handicaps, or simply agreed on the first tee. On a buddies trip nobody minds the maths being rough as long as it is the same for every team.

When to play it on a golf trip

Play the scramble on the arrival round. People are stiff from travelling, half the group has not swung a club in a month, and nobody wants their weekend defined by the first nine holes.

It is also the format to reach for when the group's abilities are wildly mixed, or when you are on the clock and need to keep four balls moving.

House rules worth agreeing first

Minimum drives. Requiring each player's tee shot to be used at least once or twice stops one long hitter playing the whole round. This is the rule most worth having.
Whether the ball may be placed or must be dropped.
Whether putts must be struck from the marked spot, or the marker's line can be used.
