Singles Match Play: Rules, Dormie and How the Cup Is Decided
Quick answer: Singles match play is one player against one, scored hole by hole. Win a hole and you go 1 up; the total number of strokes never matters. The match ends as soon as one player leads by more holes than are left.
How it works
- Lowest score on a hole wins it. Equal scores halve it.
- You are described as "2 up", "1 down" or "all square" — never in strokes.
- A player can concede a putt, a hole, or the whole match at any time.
- Win by more holes than remain and the match is closed out early.
Scoring
A match ending with a player 3 up with 2 holes left is reported as "3&2". A win on the final green is "1 up". Level after 18 is "halved", and in a cup format each side takes half a point.
Dormie means the leader is up by exactly the number of holes remaining — 3 up with 3 to play. They cannot lose from there, only be caught.
Handicap allowance is usually 100% of the difference between the two players, with strokes given on holes by stroke index.
When to play it on a golf trip
Singles is the last-day session on almost every cup trip, and it should be. Everyone is playing for themselves, every match is live, and the maths stays readable — twelve matches, twelve points, first to more than half.
It is also the fairest format for a group with wide handicaps, because full strokes are in play and one bad hole costs you exactly one hole.

- Confirm the allowance and print the stroke holes on the card.
- Agree concession etiquette early so nobody feels hustled on the last green.
- Decide whether halved matches are allowed, or extra holes decide it.
