Team Stableford: Points Scoring That Survives a Blow-Up Hole

Quick answer: Team Stableford converts each player's score on a hole into points against par, then adds the team's counting points together. Because the worst you can score is zero points, a disaster hole costs you that hole and nothing more.

How it works

Each player plays their own ball and scores their hole normally.
That score converts to points based on how it compares to par, after handicap strokes.
The team adds an agreed number of players' points on each hole.
Highest total after 18 wins. Higher is better, which trips up first-timers.

Scoring

The standard points ladder, measured against your net score on the hole:

Double bogey or worse — zero points
Bogey — one point
Par — two points
Birdie — three points
Eagle — four points
Albatross — five points

A par round nets 36 points, which is the number every Stableford player quotes.

When to play it on a golf trip

Stableford is the answer to the round where somebody always falls out of the weekend. Because the floor is zero, a lost ball and a triple bogey does not end anyone's trip — they tee up on the next hole level with everyone else.

It is also the fastest scoring format in practice: once you cannot score a point, you pick up and walk on.

House rules worth agreeing first

How many players' points count per hole. Best two of four is the usual.
That everyone knows to pick up once zero points is certain. This is where the pace saving comes from.
Whether points are computed off net or gross scores. Net is the norm.
